Why I moved from Tumblr to WordPress

December 8, 2010 § 2 Comments

I love tumblr. It is a visual blogging platform perfect for artists and designers like myself. It is quick and easy to use. So why did I move everything to wordpress?

  • Outages. Tumblr communicated very poorly about the outage and how long it would last. By saying it would be back “shortly” and then having an outage that lasted 24 hours, tumblr created more and more frustration with each passing hour. Had they posted an explanation as it was happening I might not have been so hasty.
  • Matt. I had recently watched this video of Matt Mullenweg and was very impressed with his vision and generosity. He is a genuine guy that I felt I could trust.
  • Content Control. Stephanie Sullivan and Dan Cederholm had both moved to self-hosted wordpress sites from tumblr. I hope to take that step myself in the near future as it is the best way to control one’s own content.
  • Consolidation. I was also able to move my old Blogsome blog at the same time by importing it into ecto and then republishing to wordpress.com

WordPress is a writer’s platform and thus doesn’t feel entirely comfortable but I think I can make it work.

Footnote: I used Tumblr2WordPress to export my tumblr blog and then imported the images from my Tumblr Backup file.
